Sultan Qaboos University
located in Muscat, Oman, is the only public university in the Sultanate of Oman. It is located in Al Khoudh. Named after Qaboos bin Sa’id Al ‘Bu Sa’id the Sultan of Oman, the university opened in 1986. At the time, it comprised five colleges: Agriculture, Art and Islamic Studies and Science, Education, Engineering, and Medicine. With growth and reorganization it now has nine colleges: Agriculture, Art, Commerce and Economics, Education, Engineering, Law and Islamic studies, Medicine, Nursing, and Science.
Most students entering the university are selected based on their performance in the Thannawiyya Exam, given in the final year of school. Student enrollment has grown from 500 in 1986 to more than 10,000 in 2005. More than half of the students live off campus due to space constraints. It currently has around 15000 students. Female students form about half of the total population.
