Vision

The Department aspires, through its three programs, the Bachelor’s in Library and Information Science, the Higher Diploma in Medical Librarianship, and the Master’s in Library and Information Science, to provide outstanding education in information studies. It also endeavors to be an outstanding and innovative academic department serving the Omani society in the field of information with leadership at the local and regional levels.

Mission

The mission of the Department is to provide outstanding education in Library and Information Science with a rich diversity of skills in order to contribute to the community's prosperity through professional services and research, as well to prepare graduates for life-long learning and to be able to carry out information practice with competence.

Objectives

The Department aims to achieve the following objectives:
- To provide a professional training for information specialists in order to enable them to organize information and manage information institutions while respecting Omani values and customs.
- To train learning resource center specialists in order to enable them to manage this type of information institutions whether in schools, or in colleges.
- To contribute to the intellectual and scientific activities on or off campus and to carry out research by organizing seminars, conferences, and scientific meetings.
- To contribute to the continuing education of information professionals by organizing workshops and consultations.
- To offer services to information institutions and coordinate and establish cooperation with them by organizing conferences and providing consultations and transferring expertise through the participation of the Department faculty in workshops and the Alumni Open Day.
- To cooperate and coordinate with SQU academic departments, whether in the science or humanities colleges, by providing services with regard to the use of information sources, research methods, and search strategies on the Internet.
- To cooperate with Arab and foreign universities and scientific institutions in the area of scientific research, exchange of experience, and the training of Arab students in summer.

In this spirit, the College of Arts and Social Sciences at SQU mirrors the past heritage, present character, and future aspirations of Omani society. Because of its importance to the culture of the country, the College regularly reviews its programs and adjusts them according to the rapidly changing needs of the society.
Since the University was first established, the College of Arts and Social Sciences has provided its students with studies that draw upon the knowledge of both past and present civilizations. These studies, which range from the literary to the technical and scientific, have given Omani students the knowledge and skills to develop themselves both personally and professionally.

centre for community services and contuining Education

As part of the Sultan Qaboos University threefold task namely, education, research and community service, and in its efforts to make the expertise of its academics and technical staff available for the local community, the university has established the Centre for Community Service and Continuing Education (CCSCE) to act as a link between its various departments and the community. In this context, community means the wide spectrum of community groups (i.e. public and private sectors, employers, individuals, children, individual with special needs, women’s associations, expatriates etc.).



Objectives:
One of the main objectives of CCSCE is to extend educational and community services to the largest possible part of the community. In this respect, the CCSCE is providing a wide range of short term courses, seminars and workshops as well as community service activities in various fields for public and private sectors and other interested individuals and parties in the community.



The centre’s Main Goals could be summarized in the following points:
1. To strengthen the University’s relation with the community through organizing activities and events, which support the university in performing its educational and research goals, in order to serve and develop our community.

2. To extend all forms of knowledge and scientific awareness to different community sectors and individuals, through the holding of training courses and programs, in coordination with the concerned parties in the university.

3. Prepare and follow up on the progress of research studies in different areas of knowledge, especially those related to societal issues and needs, and deliver their results to the concerned parties through the tools available in the centre.

المكتبة الرئيسية بجامعة السلطان قابوس

أنشأت المكتبة الرئيسية عام 1986، وفتحت أبوابها للطلاب وأعضاء هيئة التدريس في شهر سبتمبر من نفس العام، وظلت المكتبة في نمو مطرد منذ تأسيسها والى الآن، حيث بلغت مقتنياتها 233695 مجلدا و 8096 مادة سمعية وبصرية، وحوالي 3342 عنوان دورية وثقافية (481 عربية و2861 إنجليزية) منها 1398 جارية (235 عربية و1163 إنجليزية).

تشغل المكتبة مبنى مكون من ثلاثة طوابق يتوسط مباني كليات الجامعة ويميزه الإطار الأحمر بالقرب من أعلاه، ويحتوي هذا المبنى أيضا على كل من مركز نظم المعلومات ومركز تقنيات التعليم.

تتألف المكتبة من قسمين رئيسين، هما الخدمات العامة و الخدمات الفنية

تستعمل المكتبة نظام الأرفف المفتوحة الذي يتيح للقراء فرصة الاقتراب من والتعرف على الكتب المختلفة التي تعالج موضوعاً واحداً، مما يترتب عليه الاستفادة العظمى من مصادر المكتبة وتشجيع وتنمية عادة الإطلاع.

تستخدم المكتبة الحاسب الآلي (الكمبيوتر) في معالجة جميع الإجراءات والعمليات المكتبية، من تزويد وفهرسة وتصنيف وإعارة وخدمات مرجعية.

تتولى المكتبة قدراً كبيراً في عملية التدريب لطلاب قسم المكتبات والمعلومات بالجامعة وكذا موظفي الدوائر الحكومية الأخرى.



الخدمات الفنية:

قسم التزويد (العربي/ الإنجليزي): ويقوم هذا القسم بتوفير وتنمية مصادر المعلومات بالمكتبة وذلك عن طريق الشراء والتبادل والإهداء.



يوجد بالمكتبة استمارة اقتراح الشراء يمكن من خلالها للرواد اقتراح شراء كتب معينة لتضاف إلى مجموعات المكتبة.



قسمي الفهرسة والتصنيف (العربي/ والإنجليزي): يقوم هذان القسمان بالمعالجة الفنية للمجموعات المكتبية وذلك بفهرستها وتصنيفها وفقا لقواعد الفهرسة الأنجلو –أمريكية (AACR2) ولخطة تصنيف مكتبة الكونجرس (LC Classification) والفهرس المعتمد بالمكتبة الرئيسية هو الفهرس الإلكتروني المباشر، وهو قمة أشكال الفهارس المتوفرة إذ يمكن من اختزال كميات هائلة من البيانات واسترجاعها بسرعة فائقة، وفي بداية شهر سبتمبر 1999م تم إحلال نظام أميكس AMICUS كإحدى الأنظمة المتكاملة في مجال المكتبات.



ومن المميزات الرئيسة في هذا النظام توافقه مع نظام ويندوز Windows، كما أنه مبني أساسا لاستخدامه في الحواسيب الشخصية، والفهرس العام للمكتبة OPAC متاحاً من خلال شبكة الإنترنت على العنوان التالي: http://lib,,,.squ.edu.om/.


قسم الإعداد والصيانة: مهمة هذا القسم إعداد وتجليد وترميم وصيانة مجموعات المكتبة من كتب ودوريات ومواد أخرى.

قسم الخدمات الآلية (أو نظم معلومات المكتبة): يقوم هذا القسم بالإشراف على جميع نظم المعلومات (سواء البرامج Software أو الأجهزة Hardware) المتاحة في المكتبة كما يتولى الإشراف على نظام إدارة المعلومات بمكتبات الجامعة (المكتبة الرئيسية، والطبية، ومركز معلومات كلية التجارة والاقتصاد).

ومهمة أخرى يقوم بها هذا القسم وهي تدريب موظفي المكتبة على استخدام نظام المعلومات المتاح، والإسهام في عملية اقتناء البرامج المناسبة لكل قسم من أقسام المكتبة

قسم الدوريات: تحتوي المكتبة على مجموعة قيمة من الدوريات العلمية والثقافية. وهي مرتبة هجائيا سواء على رفوف عرض الأعداد الجارية أو على رفوف الأعداد السابقة. والجدير بالذكر ان بعض هذه الدوريات متوفر على شكل مصغرات والبعض الآخر على شكل إلكتروني ومتاح عبر الإنترنت.

Sultan Qaboos University

located in Muscat, Oman, is the only public university in the Sultanate of Oman. It is located in Al Khoudh. Named after Qaboos bin Sa’id Al ‘Bu Sa’id the Sultan of Oman, the university opened in 1986. At the time, it comprised five colleges: Agriculture, Art and Islamic Studies and Science, Education, Engineering, and Medicine. With growth and reorganization it now has nine colleges: Agriculture, Art, Commerce and Economics, Education, Engineering, Law and Islamic studies, Medicine, Nursing, and Science.

Most students entering the university are selected based on their performance in the Thannawiyya Exam, given in the final year of school. Student enrollment has grown from 500 in 1986 to more than 10,000 in 2005. More than half of the students live off campus due to space constraints. It currently has around 15000 students. Female students form about half of the total population.

عمادة القبول والتسجيل في جامعة السلطان قابوس، هي أحد العمادات التي تضطلع بمسؤولياتها كاملة أمام المجتمع الجامعي بكافة شرائحه، فهي تعمل على تقديم أفضل الخدمات للطلاب والمجتمع وتعمل على تطبيق أنظمة الجامعة الأكاديمية بما يخدم الجامعة وطلابها وبرامجها وهي بذلك تخدم المجتمع الذي منه هؤلاء الطلاب ويعودون إليه. والعمادة إذ تعمل على تطبيق أنظمة الجامعة، فإنها تضع أمام عينيها هدفا أسمى من تخريج الطلاب ومنحهم الدرجات العلمية، ألا وهو الحرص على أن يكون الخريج الذي يحمل اسم الجامعة مؤهلا التأهيل الصحيح متكاتفة في هذا المسعى مع كليات الجامعة ومراكزها المختلفة ليكون حقيقا بالخريج حمل اسم جامعة السلطان قابوس. كما أنها تعمل على العمل بمبادئ الجودة في خدماتها مستنيرة في ذلك من هدي الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم الذي يقول: "إن الله يحب إذا عمل أحدكم عملا أن يتقنه"؛ وهي بلا شك حين تقوم بذلك أيضا، فإنها تلتمس من التوجيهات السامية لقائد البلاد المفدى يحفظه الله ويرعاه، الطريق الذي يجب سلوكه لخدمة هذا الوطن العزيز.

"إن عمادة القبول والتسجيل بجامعة السلطان قابوس من أجل الوصول إلى رؤيتها المستقبلية، ستعمل على تقديم أفضل الخدمات بما يتوافق مع مستجدات العصر ويتواكب مع متطلبات المستقبل مستفيدة من تطبيق التقنيات الحديثة وتبسيط الإجراءات؛ مساهمة بذلك في رفع شأن الجامعة والوطن"


أهداف العمادة:
- الهدف العام: "تقديم أفضل الخدمات وبكافة الطرق للوصول إلى رؤية العمادة المستقبلية وتحقيق رسالتها والحفاظ على منجزاتها لرفع اسم الجامعة والوطن والحفاظ على هذه المكانة".


- الأهداف الخاصة:
 أن تقدم أفضل الخدمات للطلاب وأعضاء الهيئات الأكاديمية والكليات والمراكز والمجتمع.
 أن تطور جميع الأنظمة العاملة بها لتواكب مستجدات العصر ومتطلبات المستقبل.
 أن تسهم في تطوير الأنظمة واللوائح الأكاديمية الخاصة بالقبول والتسجيل، والملاحظة الأكاديمية، غيرها.
 أن تطور الكوادر العاملة فيها بما يحقق الكفاءة المهنية كل في مجال عمله.
 أن ترتقي بموظفيها ليكونوا مرجعا للخبرة والاستشارة في شؤون القبول والتسجيل والأنظمة الأكاديمية.
 أن تبني نظاما إعلاميا متكاملا يسهم في نشر الوعي العام بمجالات عمل العمادة.
 أن تقدم الخبرات والاستشارات في مجالات القبول والتسجيل على المستوى الوطني.

دائرة القبول للدراسات الجامعية:
تختص دائرة القبول للدراسات الجامعية بقبول الطلاب في برامج الدراسات الجامعية المختلفة وذلك بالتنسيق مع مركز القبول الموحد طبقا للوائح والأنظمة والشروط المحددة من قبل الكليات، كما تعنى بقبول الطلاب في برامج الدبلومات المتخصصة حسب ما تقرره الجامعة. كما تختص الدائرة بقبول الطلاب المحولين من مؤسسات علمية أخرى، وبتحويل الطلاب بين برامج الجامعة المختلفة حسب الشروط والأنظمة المحددة لذلك.



دائرة القبول للدراسات العليا:

تهتم دائرة القبول للدراسات العليا بتنظيم عمليات قبول الطلاب في برامج الدراسات العليا بدأ من قبول الطلبات وتدقيقها ومراجعتها لتتوافق مع شروط القبول في البرامج المتقدم إليها الطالب وتنسيق إجراء الاختبارات اللازمة للمتقدمين ورفع قوائم المقبولين للاعتماد. كما تعنى بإعداد التقارير الخاصة بطلاب الدراسات العليا أو الكليات في مجالات اختصاصها. وأخيرا وليس آخرا، متابعة سير الطلاب الدراسي مع مكتب نائب رئيس الجامع ة للدراسات العليا والبحث العلمي من خلال القنوات المحددة قانونا.



دائرة التسجيل والسجلات:

تعتبر دائرة التسجيل والسجلات أكبر دوائر العمادة وأكثر أقسامها ازدحاماً في جدول أعمالها، وتضطلع دائرة التسجيل والسجلات بالكثير من المهام الرئيسية وعلى مدار العام من بينها:
- تسجيل مقررات الطلاب وتنظيم آلية التسجيل عن طريق الانترنت.
- القيام بأعمال الحذف والإضافة.
- القيام بأعمال إدخال درجات الطلاب واعتمادها والإشراف على تنظيم الإجراءات المتعلقة بها.
- مراجعة خطط الطلاب الأكاديمية وتدقيقها للتأكد من استحقاق الطلاب للتخرج بالتنسيق مع كليات الجامعة.
- متابعة تطبيق نظام الملاحظة الأكاديمية.
- تأجيل الدراسة.
- إصدار إفادات التخرج ورسائل الأوضاع الأكاديمية للطلاب.
- حفظ سجلات الطلاب.
- اقتراح مشاريع وخطط التطوير في مجالات التسجيل والسجلات وشؤون الخريجين.



دائرة الجداول والمعلومات الأكاديمية:

تتمركز مهام عمل دائرة الجداول والمعلومات الأكاديمية على جدولة جميع المقررات الدراسية بالجامعة وجدولة الامتحانات النهائية. كما تقوم الدائرة بأعمال إدخال وتحديث بيانات المقررات والخطط الدراسية إلى نظام معلومات الطلاب بما يسهل عمل دوائر العمادة الأخرى التي ترتكز على المعلومات الأكاديمية. وتقوم أيضا بإعداد التقارير والمشاركة في الدراسات حول الغرف الدراسية والسعة الاستيعابية لمباني الجامعة التدريسية



دائرة نظم معلومات الطلاب:

تقوم دائرة نظم معلومات الطلاب بتصميم وتطوير والإشراف على موقع العمادة الإلكتروني. كما تعنى بإصدار البطاقات الجامعية للطلاب والبيانات والإحصائيات الأكاديمية المعنية بالطلاب وتقدم الدعم الفني لموظفي العمادة وللأجهزة المستخدمة فيها. كما تقوم الدائرة بالعمل كحلقة وصل بين العمادة وبين مستخدمي نظام معلومات الطلاب من طلاب وأعضاء هيئات التدريس والمراكز وتوفير الخدمة لهم عن طريق الإنترنت.

The Language Centre, like any other university organization bearing the same or similar name, is an academic language support unit whose primary function is to prepare students of the university to meet the rigorous demands of instruction in a foreign or second language. This preparation sows the seeds of language proficiency that will ultimately develop the students’ full potential as participants in a modern bilingual society, or for success in English-medium professional careers.


In addition to delivering general and academic English language skills courses to over 6000 students each semester, the Language Centre also assesses and certifies all its students for progression to various university credit courses. Most of the credit courses are taught in English, but students of the two predominantly Arabic-medium colleges are required to enroll in English language proficiency courses in order to fulfill university requirements. Whereas the students are the main pre-occupation of the Language Centre, it must be emphasized also that its staff are the greatest asset. With a highly qualified academic staff of over 200 instructors drawn from diverse international and academic backgrounds, the Language Centre of Sultan Qaboos University is one of the largest and finest units of its kind in the Arabian Gulf region.

The Language Centre is responsible for most English language teaching and testing at the University. The Centre offers intensive English language instruction for new students and credit English language instruction to support college courses. The credit English language instruction is divided into two groups: credit English courses for English-medium colleges and majors and credit English courses for Arabic-medium colleges and majors. The Centre also teaches English at the postgraduate level as well as English for the university administrative and technical staff.


The Language Centre has its own Testing and Assessment Unit (TAU) and Curriculum Development Unit (CDU). The Testing and Assessment Unit prepares placement and exit exams. It is also responsible for final exams in the intensive program. The Curriculum Development Unit designs curricula, reviews and develops teaching materials and supervises curriculum implementation. The two units are also involved in research related to their area of specialty. They sometimes invite experts from Oman and abroad for the purpose of training and consultation.


Support facilities for students and teachers are available in the form of self-access resources and e-learning. The Language Centre has a Teacher Resource Centre and a Student Resource Centre. The Teacher Resource Centre provides the Language Centre’s academic staff with professional support through the provision of books, journals and audio-visual materials. The Language Centre also has a Student Affairs Officer who provides help and guidance to students.


The Language Centre has an academic staff of over 200 teachers from 29 different countries. The Language Centre is fully committed to supporting professional development for its faculty through workshops and seminars in areas related to teaching, testing and materials development. The Centre has recently established a Professional Development Committee that looks into matters of staff development. The most prominent teacher development event is the annual English language teaching conference which attracts ELT scholars and practitioners from around the world.

Academic staff members at the Language Centre are encouraged to carry out research projects in various aspects of English language teaching and learning, testing, curriculum and methodology, and participate in a range of national and international conferences, symposia and professional journals. Their active research helps to enhance the academic reputation of the Language Centre and Sultan Qaboos University and inform the teaching and testing practices. The Language Centre has a Research Committee whose primary objectives are to facilitate research within the centre and foster an atmosphere conducive to research. The committee is also responsible for periodically soliciting opinions from faculty members about potential areas of research that have a bearing on the centre's operations and for prioritizing and commissioning internal research projects.


The Language Centre has a strategic plan which is reviewed periodically. The strategic goals serve as a roadmap towards achieving excellence in the areas of teaching, curriculum, testing and assessment, instructional resources, human resources, management structure, research, and community services.
